This lecture aims to present a comprehensive knowledge framework on the fundamental concept of international business by reviewing and analyzing the most significant academic definitions and extracting the shared features that distinguish this economic activity from domestic ones. It also sheds light on the intellectual origins of the field by exploring the contributions of one of its foremost pioneers, Canadian economist Stephen Hymer, considered the founder of the analytical perspective on international business, especially concerning multinational corporations and foreign direct investment (FDI).
Through an overview of the stages of international business development as proposed by Hymer, students will gain a historical and theoretical understanding of how this field evolved, alongside the intellectual and economic transformations that shaped cross-border economic relations under accelerating globalization.
