
This module aims to develop students’ understanding of key concepts related to politics, economics, religion, society, education, culture, and other areas of British civilisation. Students will read selected books and materials provided by the teacher, conduct further research, and prepare well-structured academic papers on assigned topics. They will present their work in a clear, comprehensive, and well-organised manner, developing their research, critical thinking, academic writing, and presentation skills.

This module introduces students to the expansion and development of the British Empire from its early beginnings to its transformation into the modern Commonwealth. It explores the geographical expansion of British rule across different regions of the world, examining the political, economic, religious, and strategic factors that contributed to imperial expansion. Students will also examine the major impacts of British imperialism on colonised societies, including cultural exchange, economic change, political transformation, language, and resistance movements. The module concludes by considering the decline of the British Empire and the emergence and role of the Commonwealth in the contemporary world.
